Borg-Warner T-5 tranny

My brother owns an ’85 Mustang GT with a Borg-Warner T-5 manual
transmission.  He is having trouble with the synchro on 2nd gear (he
also reports that 1st and 3rd are not far behind).  The simplest
problem, I would think without tearing the thing apart, which would
cause this would be a bad/split synchro cone.

The problem, however, is where to get the sucker.  He went to a
transmission shop and they would only sell it to him if they installed
it.  The Ford dealer in the Chicago area (where he lives) told him the
only way to get it was by buying the whole output shaft assembly.  This
costs mega$$, in fact, over half of what a shiny new T-5 would be from
Ford Motorsport.

I went to the local autoparts store/machine shop and asked them.  The
only syncros they showed in their catalogs were for Muncie and B-W T-10
(’65-’73).

Can anybody out there in netland give me some info on where to get
syncro cones for a Borg-Warner T-5 transmission used in an ’85 Mustang
GT?

                                     At whit’s end,
                                     Dan

I would like to thank everyone for the responses to my question about synchros
for a Borg-Warner T-5 transmission.  Unfortunately, the day after I posted the
article, my brother found a place and put an order in for their "rebuild kit"
which includes synchros, seals, bushings, etc.

It seems that many people suggested that we get these parts from a
junkyard.  Now, to me, that sounds like getting piston rings and
crankshaft bearings from a junk engine.  What’s the feeling on this?  I
know that when I was looking for a new steering gearbox for my Volvo a
few years back (I never did get one and I still have the car), I
couldn’t find one in much better shape than the one I had.

Anyway, this kit is around $159, so I think this will work well for us.

Are you sure he is using the correct lube in the T5? The T5 in
my 77 Sunbird called for ATF! It was the best shifting tranny
I’ve ever had in a car. The wrong lube will screw up shifting,
