Learning auto repair

Hi – I’m new to auto repair but have been really getting into it for
past couple of months, and was just wondering what you thought about
learning auto repair entirely on your own – whether it’s possible or
just too impractical compared to taking courses.  There’s this GM AS
degree in this community college that I really want to do – the
problem is that it’s tough to schedule everything (I’m in grad
school), and it’s also 50 miles away (a lot for my car), which the
closest place that has affordable auto repair classes, at least that I
know of.  There’s public technical HSs here which would be great but
they only accept HS students.  And the tech colleges are too expensive
($20,000+) and besides, scheduling would be even more difficult.
So basically, what do you think about learning auto repair entirely on
your own?  I want the full deal too, not just knowing how to change
your oil etc., but being able to do everything a mechanic can do.
thanks, dave

Will a hole in the Y-pipe of a vehicle cause any damage if left for a
while? Like 6 months?

12 volt car heater/defroster that works?

HI, I thought I would ask the knowing if there is a decent 12 volt
heater/defroster that I can get for my Escort. The heater core went
and they did the bypass thing as I couldn’t afford the heater core
replacement, whew, like $700. So, I have been checking into this
alternative but most reviewers say they are a hunk of junk. Finally,
if there is a cheaper alternative please redirect me. Thanks for
listening and assisting, psongman

repeaditely blowing ignition modules inside distributor

i have a 1986 nissan pulsar, no ECU, just basic E16 engine. I’ve gone
through 4 ignition modules inside the distributor. once the first one
blew, the next one lasted 5 minutes. I had forgotten to put the di-
electric grease on the back. The next one i put in lasted 3 weeks, up
until yesterday when it blew again. The third one i put in, i
gracoulsy lathered the dielectric grease on the back of it, and it
lasted 15 seconds.

Note: these are used modules i’m putting in, because new ones are 250$
a pop. Any ideas?

2008 Subaru Tribeca

The crossover segment is hotter than a kitchen fire at Buffalo Wild
Wings, so Subaru could ill afford to wait to update its Tribeca, which
landed with a thud two years ago when it was launched with a strange
face, an overworked powertrain, and a pointless B9 prefix.

Possible culprits behind intermittent headlight loss?

Have a ’66 Fairlane wagon, the headlights will blank out after maybe
15 – 20 minutes on low beam. Turning the switch off for a few secs and
then turning on will typically get them back on temporarily but
they’ll continue to go out. Further, hitting the hi beams is almost
guaranteed to kill the lights. Replaced the switch and the floor
dimmer, neither cures the problem.

Any suggestions as to where to begin looking?

Thanks.
