Leaking diff

I have a ’93 Eplorer 4×4 and a couple of days ago I noticed the smell
of gear oil when I’m around the rear but never saw and drips or satins
on the driveway.  i was hoping it was my imagination, but today toward
the end of a long ride i began to smell burning when accelerating hard
up a hill.  I got under there and noticed some oil had been leaking out
where the shaft goes in to the differential in the rear.  i think the
burning smell was from the oil flying off the shaft yoke and on to the
exhaust.  At least i hope so. Does this sound like a pinion seal?  if
so is it a reasonable DIY job on this car?  What about trying to add a
seal softener or something to string it along or awhie?  Would
appreciate any feedback.   Never had diff problems before.  Thanks.

P0401 code 1997 Isuzu Rodeo

I am getting a P0401 code on a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo V6 engine with
approximately 140,000 miles. EGR valve has been replace a few years
ago. The check engine light comes on and sets the P0401 code when the
fuel tank is 1/4 tank full or less. When you fill the tank with gas the
check engine light goes out after you drive the vehicle for a while and
cycle the engine on and off. The check engine light will come on when
the tank again drops below 1/4 full. Any ideas as to the problem.

Crap, I have a cracked block

In my original post weeks ago:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.autos.tech/browse_thread/thread/88…

I was experiencing coolant loss and overheating, well I took the
exhaust header off this week-end and found a cracked block. I could see
the fluid oozing from the block.

I was wondering about my options thinking they are ( in order of cost,
high to low ):
a) buy new engine and install self
b) pull engine self, have it rebuilt with new block, install self
c) get used engine, install self

Anyone know of some other options I may have?

1991 volvo 740

I just bought a ’91 volvo 740. And it runs great, until you use about a
third of the gas, then all hell breaks loose. It doesn’t start, the
engine turns and turns and turns, but until you get more gas in it, it
doesn’t seem to want to start. I have the same problem when its hot
outside, which, for Arizona, is just about every day. I also have a
problem the gas guage. It does not correctly reflect how much gasoline
you actually have in your tank.any ideas on what I can do or should do?
anything would help, please.

fuel pump flow rate?

’99 Cavalier 2.2, port injected.  Engine catches, but dies immediately.
I suspect it’s a fuel problem.  What sort of ‘free’ flow rate should I
get, with an open line just dumping into a container?

Thanks,
Geoge

Brakes Squealing When Turning

My ’97 Camaro Z28 is making a *LOUD* metallic squeal when turning hard
left. It’s *VERY* annoying and when driving with the windows down or the
T-tops off it’s unbearable. The thing is that it only happens when I
turn left, and comes from the right rear of the car. I think it’s the
brakes, because if I pull the e-brake one notch it almost completely
goes away, and it’s quiet if I’m accelerating hard.

I took the wheel off to see if something was loose or whatever, but all
the bolts were tight and the brake pads were in the correct position.
However, the spring that’s on the back of the bads, on the other side of
the caliper, was loose on one of the pads. Likewise, the thin H shaped
piece that’s between the calipers was loose too, but I doubt that’s got
anything to do with it.

Any ideas what more to look for?

Thanks,

When shifting tranny makes noises ..or am I CRAZY??!

Hey all,
I’ve got a 1993 Honda Accord with manual transmission.   I’ve
recently replaced the CV Axles, both front struts and Master Cylinder
(yay!).   I’ve since noticed that my transmission is make some shifting
noises.    When I’m shifting into a new gear it makes a clicking noise
(not a quiet noise either) and as well when I let the clutch back in
and it grabs there is a click.

I’ve neglected my car much in the past few years and postponed
many fixes for many years.  I was extremely broke and now I’m not
extremely broke, so I started replacing bad things, like my CV axles
and then everything needed fixing.   I am addicted to fixing things on
my car now, so I may just be hearing noises that have always been
there.  I might just be listening more to my car.  I might be thinking
too much about it.   BUT, I have NEVER heard this noise in the past.

It’s paid off, so I’m afraid to let it get hurt.  It would suck
right now if I had to get some new car with more money to spend a
month….

I’ve changed out my tranny oil and still the same noise.     am I
crazy?
